Kabul (Agenzia Fides) - A new missionary sister has just arrived in Afghanistan and will work at the Children's Center of the "PBK - Pro Bambini of Kabul" Association. This is what Father Giovanni Scalese, a Barnabite missionary in charge of the Afghan Missio sui iuris, reports in a note sent to Agenzia Fides. The new arrival is Indian Sister Teresia Crasta, of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, of Saints B. Capitanio and V. Gerosa: "Before coming to Afghanistan, Sister Teresia worked in a rehabilitation center in Mangalore for 14 years. She is an educator and a nurse", informs Fr. Scalese.
The religious succeeds Sister Mariammal Irudayasami, of the Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, who left Kabul after five and a half years of service at the "PBK Center": Sister Mariammal, in fact, arrived in Afghanistan in 2013 and carried out her service until last November, flanked by a Missionary of the Consolata from Mozambique.
The "Pro Bambini of Kabul" Association is an inter-congregational reality founded in 2006 by Guanellian missionary Fr. Giancarlo Pravettoni, who had been inspired by the special appeal to save Afghan children, made by John Paul II during the Christmas speech of 2001. The work of the association is aimed in particular at the education of disabled children, who in Afghanistan are often completely abandoned by their families. Currently, the PBK Center welcomes about 40 children.
Since 2006, the project of the association continues with some difficulties: in addition to raising funds to support the school, one of the greatest obstacles is constituted by the need to identify missionary sisters, who have a culture close to that of Afghanistan and who are willing to spend some years in a war territory like that of Kabul.
