ASIA/KOREA - The Pope appoints new auxiliary Bishop of Pusan

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on 17 January 2006 appointed Auxiliary of the diocese of Pusan (Korea) Rev. Paul Hwang Cheol-soo, former diocesan chancellor, assigning to him the titular see of Vico di Pacato.
The new auxiliary Bishop Paul Hwang Cheol-soo was born on 15 April 1953 at Miriang, Milyhang-shi, Kyoungnam, Pusan. He attended Kwangju major seminary. He obtained a licentiate in fundamental theology at the University of Eichstätt in Germany. He was ordained a priest on 5 February 1983 in Pusan for that diocese.
He has since ministered as follows:(1983-1984) assistant priest at Mang-Mi; (1984-1987) parish priest at Mang-Mi; (1987-1991) professor at Pusan Catholic College; (1994-1996) parish priest at Cheon-Ha and Ulsan in two different parishes; (1996-1997) administration director of Maryknoll Hospital; (1997-2000) parish priest at To-Hyeon; (2000-2001) head of diocesan mission pastoral; (2001-2004) Member of diocesan council of advisors, council of priests, and pastoral council, vice diocesan chancellor, then diocesan chancellor and at the same time for a few months in 2004 parish priest at Weol-Pyeong, Ulsan; (October 2004) sabbatical year.
