AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - 15 children die in botched vaccine campaign

Monday, 5 June 2017

Juba (Agenzia Fides) - Fifteen young children have died in a botched measles vaccination campaign. Children, 5 years of age, lived in the village of Kapoeta, in the southeast of the Country. According to a survey conducted by the World Health Organization and UNICEF, about 300 children were vaccinated in a four-day campaign during which a local medical team used a single syringe to combine several vaccine vials. The vials, provided by UNICEF, were stored in an inadequate refrigerated building.
Another 32 children have suffered the consequences of poorly administered vaccination but have overcome the crisis.
The nursing team had received training from WHO and its partners but did not scrupulously follow the vaccine administration procedures. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 5/6/2017)
