Ho Chi Minh City (Agenzia Fides) - The first Catholic University in Vietnam has officially opened: in the first academic year, inaugurated a few days ago, there are 23 students who attend the lessons of the Catholic Institute of Vietnam, as reported to Fides by Bishop Mgr. Joseph Dinh Duc Dao, Rector of the Institute and president of the Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education. "It is an important step for the Vietnamese Church that takes place during the Jubilee year" notes the Bishop, expressing his satisfaction to Fides. "It is a work of mercy that, thank God, begins in the Holy Year. Our approach is that of compassion, accomplished through the service of education", he explains.
The university, the first ever since the country was reunified under communist rule in 1975, is officially recognized by the Holy See and received the authorization by the government. During the opening ceremony, held on 14 September in Ho Chi Minh City, the Bishop remarked that "the Institute aims to improve theological knowledge and the skills of priests, religious and lay people, so that they can live an authentic life of faith in a rapidly changing society".
The institute will be able to confer the recognized title of bachelor, licentiate and doctorate in theology. According to the project, courses in sacramental, dogmatic, moral theology will be offered, but also in liturgy and biblical studies, spirituality, missiology, canon law, as well as philosophy, psychology and social sciences.
