Assiut (Agenzia Fides) - The Coptic Orthodox Church is mobilizing against illiteracy, affecting sectors of the Egyptian population belonging to different generations. The pilot experiment of the new campaign for literacy started in the parish of St. John in the village of Dewaina in the governorate of Assiut. Father Karas Badri, pastor of the church, announced the start, at the parochial premises, of basic courses for both young and elderly illiterate, noting that radical ignorance is an essential ingredient to the development of extremism and sectarianism.
In the list of states for literacy rate, Egypt occupies the 142esimo out of 179, more than a quarter of the population is illiterate. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 13/07/2016)
