Accra (Agenzia Fides) - "We are saddened by the news about the many migrant deaths in the deserts of North Africa and in the waters of the Mediterranean and we appeal to States and African governments to take measures to prevent this tragedy", said a joint statement of the Episcopal Conference of Ghana and of the Christian Council of Ghana, published at the end of their meeting to take stock of the situation in the Country
"Even the migration of Africans in South America is becoming an emerging danger" emphasize the Ghanaian Christian leaders in the text sent to Fides. "We urge African governments to do all they can to create a favorable political and socio-economic environment and employment opportunities for our unemployed youth ... We also encourage young Africans to stay in their Countries and to work hard to earn a living. They must understand that Europe and other areas outside Africa do not automatically guarantee comfort and pleasure".
Referring to the general elections to be held in November, Christian leaders say they are concerned about "the political impunity demonstrations in which there is intimidation, accusations, counter-accusations, incitement to hatred, violence between parties and within them, threats of kidnappings and murders".
"These acts are poisoning the political atmosphere and that is why we ask politicians and their followers to help calm the rising political tension in the Country".
Another threat to the peaceful coexistence stems from the increase in religious fanaticism preached by "so-called men and women of God, who deceive people into believing they are the answer to their problems. We call on all Ghanaians to be wary of these charlatans, so as not to fall prey to their machinations. Our different religious organizations are ready to help you cope with the activities of these so called men of God". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 07/06/2016)
