Nuakchot (Agenzia Fides) - 44% of Mauritania's rural population lives in a situation of crippling poverty, particularly in rural regions. This is what the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Extreme Poverty highlights, following a visit to the three regions of the Country. In particular, the phenomenon regards the ethnic group of Harratines, descendants from the ancient Arabized slaves, and Black Africans, both systematically absent from all positions of power and excluded from many aspects of social and economic life. These groups account for over two thirds of the population. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 17/05/2016)
