Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - Sudan could face an increase in food insecurity and hunger because of the El Niño impact on cattle. Below average rainfall in many of Sudan’s traditionally pluvial areas during the rainy season, June to October, now threatens to restrict areas of pastureland and availability of water, and also increase sickness among the animals. Seventy two areas of Sudan are most at risk regarding the loss of livestock due to the El Nino meteorological phenomenon and food insecurity affects mainly families of small farmers in these areas. Activity to help vulnerable families continue their subsistence farming is an important way of mitigating the impact of lack of rain and avoiding greater food insecurity during the difficult season in 2016. Healthy animals produce up to 60% more meat and milk for vulnerable families. Sale of meat and milk in excess constitutes an important source of income that helps rural families meet their basic needs. (AP) (2/12/2015 Agenzia Fides)
