San Pedro Sula (Agenzia Fides) – "So many die because of violence and worship of money, perhaps the worst idolatry of all, the most bloodthirsty god, a monster, calmed only by the shedding of blood. Sadly, most of these dead are young people" said Bishop Rómulo Emiliani Sánchez, C.M.F, auxiliary of San Pedro Sula, during celebration for the 51st anniversary of the country’s most widely read newspaper La Prensa.
The latest reports speak of 16 murders every day in Honduras. According to Mgr. Emiliani "there is a constant increase the number of deaths for questions connected with drug trafficking, organised crime, fighting between drug cartels, fighting within themselves, every time cases of extremely bloodthirsty violence".
The message sent to Fides underlines that the Bishop deplores the attitude of those in society who see "a Honduras on its knees, dominated by fear and desperation, where the only thing to say is, we must escape! We have to go! Go anywhere, to any other country”. “I sincerely believe – he said – that Honduras can make it, can stand up, can react, I am firmly convinced that Honduras is capable of reacting positively to this situation ".
Bishop Emiliani wished the newspaper’s staff a serene future at the service of the community because in 51 years the paper has proved itself a service which informs, directs and instructs the people of all Honduras. “La Prensa must continue to be a light in this country” the Bishop said.
