Georgetown (Agenzia Fides) – A government survey has revealed a concerning rate of child labour in Guyana. Minors involved in prostitution and five year olds exploited on farms using toxic substances. The tragic situation was made public by the Ministry for Social Safety. The study undertaken in Georgetown, found 532 children working as street vendors and in the fields. The Ministry intends to tackle the problem with immediate security measures. These include a special unit for the eradication of child labour, improved application of existing laws, increased funds to ensure law enforcement, to remove children from the streets and make certain they attend school.
