Vatican City (Fides Service) - “Catholic clergy and laity in China have great respect for the new Pope. They are filled with hope and are praying hard for him”, Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-hsi bishop of Kaohsiung in Taiwan told Fides the day after the election of Benedict XVI. “The new Pope is an eminent theologian and his position on doctrine is very clear. In his homily during the Mass to open the Conclave, he almost laid down the points of his pontificate as he listed the challenges facing the faith and the Church. With him we know where the Church is directed and we see clearly the vision of the faith with regard to the modern world. I am certain that Benedict XVI will continue along the line of John Paul II” the Cardinal said.
Speaking of the future of the Church in China, Cardinal Shan added: “In relations with China the trouble is, if China wants an independent Church this will always be outside the universal Church and will also be an obstacle o relations with the Holy See. However we pray and we hope the future will be better”. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 23/4/2005 righe 16 parole 167)
