AFRICA/EGYPT - The Islamic University of Al Azhar condemns the massacre of jihadist of Christian Ethiopians

Tuesday, 21 April 2015

Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - A "heinous crime, committed by the Daesh terrorist group, which goes against any religion, law or human conduct". With these formulas without appeal the University of Al Azhar, highest academic center of Sunni Islam, has condemned the killing of 28 Ethiopians carried out by the jihadists of the Islamic State who have released videos of barbaric executions on the website of their media presenting victims as members of the "hostile Ethiopian Church". The conviction is expressed in a statement, attributed by the Egyptian media to Imam Ahmed al-Tayyeb and sent to Agenzia Fides. In the statement, the Islamic University extends its condolences to the Government and people of Ethiopia and to the families of the victims. Last January, in the visit to Egypt, the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church Mathias I was also received by the Grand Imam of Al Azhar.
Meanwhile, also on Sunday, April 19 Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi received John Brennan, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Cairo, for an exchange of thoughts on many emergencies that afflict the Arab countries, and also the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, Primus inter pares of the Anglican Communion. During the talks, the Egyptian President insisted that in Egypt Christians are not considered in the punitive and reductive sense as a "minority", but they are Egyptian citizens, with the same rights and duties as others.
