ASIA/VIETNAM - Appointment of Auxiliary Bishop of Long Xuyen

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On April 5, 2014 the Holy Father appointed Rev. Joseph Trần Văn Toan, Director of the Pastoral Center as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Long Xuyen, Vietnam, assigning him the titular see of Acalisso.
Rev. Joseph do Trần Văn Toan, was born on April 7, 1955 in Thái Bình, North Vietnam, but civilly registered in the Province of Quang Nam, Diocese of Đà Nẵng. He received his priestly formation from 1966 to 1974, at the Minor Seminary of the Diocese of Long Xuyen, and then from 1974 to 1981 at the Major Seminary of the same See. For 11 years he served in the parishes of Moi Khoi and Thanh Quoi (Diocese of Long Xuyen), waiting to get government permission for his ordination. He was ordained a priest on 16 January 1992, incardinated in the Diocese of Long Xuyen.
After ordination he has served in a number of pastoral and academic roles: 1992-1999: Parish Vicar of N.S. of the Rosary, Lang Sen; 2000-2005: Studies at the De La Salle University in Manila, Philippines, where he obtained his Doctorate in Education; since 2006: Director of the Pastoral Center and Coordinator of pastoral and missionary activities of the Diocese, the Rector of the St. Theresa Minor Seminary, Teacher of Missiology in the inter-diocesan Major Seminary in Cần Thơ.
