ASIA/SOUTH KOREA-Appointment of the Auxiliary Bishop of Kwangju

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On May 12, 2011 the Holy Father Benedict XVI appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Kwangju (Korea), the Rev. do Simon Ok Hyun-jin, of the clergy of Kwangju, Professor at the Catholic University of Kwangju, assigning him the titular bishop of Pederodiana.
Rev. do Simon Ok Hyun-jin, was born in the city of Kwangju on March 5, 1968. He studied at the Catholic University in Kwangju (Major Seminar) from 1986 to 1994 and he got a masters in Theology. He was ordained a priest 17 years ago, on January 26, 1994, and incardinated in the Archdiocese of Kwangju. After his ordination he has held the following positions: 1994-1995: assistant priest at Nongseong-dong; 1995-1996: assistant priest in Buk –dong; 1996-2004: Studies for a Ph.D. in Ecclesiastical History at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, 2004-2006: Parish of Woonnam-dong; 2005-2010: Director of the Research Centre of History of the Catholic Church at the University of Kwangju; Since 2006: Professor at the Catholic University in Kwangju, Spiritual Assistant Director; Since 2007: Member of the Committee on the Doctrine of Faith of the Korean Bishops Conference.
