AFRICA/GHANA - Appointment of Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father Benedict XVI, on 5 April 2011, appointed as Bishop of the Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga (Ghana), Fr Alfred Agyenta, from the clergy of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, Professor at the Major Seminary of St Victor in Tamale.
Fr Alfred Agyenta was born on 20 January 1959 in the village of Wiagha, Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese. He studied philosophy and theology at the Major Seminary of St Victor. He was ordained a priest on 6 August 1988 and appointed to the Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga. After being ordained he held the following ministries: 1988-1991: Assistant parish priest of Our Lady of Sorrow Cathedral in Navrongo; 1991-1995: Studies for Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Biblicum in Rome; 1995-2000: Professor at the Major Seminary of St Victor in Tamale; 2000-2006: Doctorate studies in theology at the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium; since 2006: Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Major Seminaries of St Augustine and St Victor in Tamale.
The Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgotanga (1956), is a suffragan of the Metropolitan See of Tamale. It has an area of 16,602 sq. km, with 1,731,343 inhabitants, of whom 104,165 are Catholic (6%). There are 16 parishes, served by 42 diocesan priests, 14 men religious, 27 brothers and 41 religious sisters. There are 23 major seminarians. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 5/04/2011)
