AFRICA/EQUATORIAL GUINEA - Appointment of Bishop of Ebebiyin

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father Benedict XVI, on 19 February 2011, appointed as Bishop of the Diocese of Ebebiyin (Equatorial Guinea), Father Juan Nsue Edjang Mayé, until now Parish Priest of the parishes of Our Lady of Carmen and of Mary the Helper on the Island of Bioko.
Fr Juan Nsue Edjang Mayé was born in Mikomeseng-Kie Ntem on 9 November 1957. He was ordained a priest on 25 March 1995 and appointed to the Archdiocese of Malabo. He was Parish Priest pf the Cathedral of Malabo, Treasurer of the same archdiocese, spiritual director and formator of La Purísima interdiocesan seminary in Bata. He completed his theology studies in Spain, receiving his Licentiate in Church History in the faculty of Theology in Toledo. Currently he is Parish Priest of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and María Auxiliadora on the Island of Bioko. Other than the local language in Equatorial Guinea, he also speaks Spanish and French.
The Diocese of Ebebiyin, created in 1982, has an area of 12,000 sq. km and a population of 204,000, of whom 164,000 are Catholic. There are 12 parishes, 33 priests (21 diocesan and 12 religious), 6 religious brothers, 68 sisters and 18 major seminarians. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 21/02/2011)
