AFRICA/NIGERIA - New Rector appointed at Saint Thomas Aquinas major inter-diocesan Seminary in the diocese of Makurdi

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) –Cardinal Ivan Dias, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, on 16 October 2009, appointed Rev. Cyril Oloruntoyin Obanure, of the diocesan clergy of Lokoja, Rector of Saint Thomas Aquinas major inter-diocesan Seminary in the diocese of (Nigeria).
The new Rector was born on 9 February 1967 at Ogidi-Ijmu, Kogi State (Nigeria). After attending primary school at Ogidi-Ijmu (1973-1978), he went to St. Augustine’s College, Kabba (1978-1983), then on to St. Augustine’s Major Seminary in Jos (1983-1988) and finally to the Pontifical Urban College in Rome (1998-1992). He was ordained a priest in Rome in 1992. He obtained a doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Urban University in 2001. Since his ordination he has served as follows: diocesan secretary, diocesan finance coordinator, diocesan youth chaplain, a member of the diocesan liturgy commission and the diocesan communications department; professor of dogmatic theology and dean of the theology department at St. Thomas Aquinas Provincial Major Seminary, Makurdi, of which he has been vice rector since July 2009. Part time he taught at the National Missionary Seminary of St. Paul, Gwagwalada, Abuja, Nigeria. Since 2007 he has been President of the Catholic Theological Association of Nigeria (CATHAN).
