AMERICA/BRAZIL - “Clean Card” voting for April 7

Monday, 29 March 2010

Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) – The President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, Michel Temer, recently announced that he had put on the agenda for April 7 the "Clean Card" project (PLP 518/09), and urged leaders to make the proposal to their parties. Temer admitted that there may be changes to the text agreed by the working group, so that the proposal can be voted on by all.
According to a member of the Electoral Movement Against Corruption (MCCE), Daniel Seidel, the President of the Chamber will deliver on his word. 'The project has begun and now it's up to society to maintain contact with members of their states to have them participate in this initiative," Seidel said, adding that the MCCE will continue the work of clarification with the Members who are still resistant to the proposal. "We will fight for passage of the “Clean Card” bill. The approval by Members will demonstrate what all Brazilian society expects," he concluded.
The bill (PLP 518/09) entitled "Clean Card" prevents candidates with judicial convictions from entering the race. Introduced last year by representatives of civil society, it has collected more than 1,300,000 signatures and has also made an accelerated path in comparison to other past proposals which after many years were ready to be voted on in a plenary session. The Brazilian Bishops' Conference has followed the proposal on its website. Many Catholic communities have asked that it be approved urgently. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 29/03/2010)
