Accra (Agenzia Fides) – From February 27 to March 3 Accra (Ghana) is hosting the meeting of the Permanent Committee of the Symposium of Bishops' Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM/SCEAM).
According to a statement sent to Fides, the work of the meeting will focus an assessment of the Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops held in the Vatican last October and preparations for the next Plenary Assembly of SECAM, to be held in Accra from July 26 to August 2. The Plenary Assembly of SECAM is entitled "SECAM 40 Years Later: Autonomy and Perspective for the Church in Africa."
The meeting will be preceded by a Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Accra on Sunday, February 28, opening the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of SECAM. The Symposium was established in 1969, in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.
The Permanent Committee will also decide the future of the project for the good governance of the Symposium, which was adopted three years ago. The 3-year project that cost 1 million Euros, was helped by MISEREOR, the Development Agency of the German Bishops' Conference.
The Permanent Committee of SECAM includes Cardinal Polycarp Pengo, Archbishop of Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, the Chairman of the Symposium, the Treasurer of the Symposium, and a representative from each of the nine regions of SECAM. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 26/2/2010)
