AFRICA/GUINEA - “Who's in charge in Guinea?” local Church sources are wondering after attack on military junta leader

Conakry (Agenzia Fides) - “The question we must ask at this point is who's in charge in Guinea ', say Church sources in Guinea, who contacted Agenzia Fides, where yesterday evening, December 3, the junta head, Moussa Camara Dadis was supposedly fired on by his former aide, Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité.
"Word on the conditions of Camara continues to be made known: he is said to have suffered minor physical injuries, is said to be seriously wounded, and is even said to be dead. Under these conditions we can not give any evaluation, except that that even in the most favorable hypothesis it seems certain that the Head of State is not currently able to perform his functions. This prompts the question of who has taken his place right now,” added the Fides' sources, who for reasons of security have requested to remain anonymous.
According to unconfirmed press reports, the President of Senegal, Wade, sent a plane to Conakry to bring Camara to a hospital in Senegal. "The only news that is certain is that the situation in Guinea is calm, even though police and military checks in the capital of Conakry have been heightened,” local sources say.
Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité is accused of having led the bloody repression September 28 (more than 150 deaths) of an opposition rally in the stadium in Conakry. In these days, the UN Commission for Investigation on the massacre is in Guinea.” Another theory circulating in Guinea at this time is that the attack, real or alleged, was an attempt to get rid of Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité, considered a scapegoat for the massacre of 28 September, but even these are only rumors confirming the confusion in the country right now," concludes our source. According to some press agencies, Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité has not yet been arrested. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 4/12/2009)
