Alepe (Agenzia Fides) - There are many activities and initiatives of the Catholic Church around the world in support of AIDS patients. Among these, there is the generous commitment of the “Suore Dorotee” of Vicenza (Italy), who have been working in Ivory Coast for over 25 years. Agenzia Fides contacted Sister Tiziana Maule, who arrived in the African country in 1985, having recently graduated with a degree in medicine and who was among the first physicians to address what was then a new and uncontrollable disease.
"For 10 days I am back in Ivory Coast after 3 months of absence from the mission and service to the hospital in Alepe - Sister Tiziana told Fides -. For the World AIDS Day on December 1, we have not organized anything in particular. The country's Ministry of Health urges all public facilities to hold meetings in villages and districts, public awareness, information, testing for all those who accept the proposal, responding on the website. At the Multipurpose Center for Health Education, as “Suore Dorotee” of Alepe (CESD) we are preparing the plan for education and training activities 2009/2010 to combat different HIV/AIDS in the region of Alepe, for which we are still awaiting approval."
The mission is responsible for youth education, disease prevention, and treatment of the sick. The hospital in Alepe - strongly promoted by Sister Tiziana - was opened in 2003. This is an essential facility for a population exposed to scourges such as AIDS. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 30/11/2009)
