EUROPE/ITALY - New General Superior elected for Comboni Missionaries: Fr. Enrique Sanchez Gonzalez

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – The 17th General Chapter of the Comboni Missionaries, which was taking place in Rome, on October 21 elected a new Superior General: Mexican Father Enrique Sanchez Gonzales, who succeeds Fr. Teresino Serra. Fr. Sanchez was born on January 27, 1958 in Sahuayo, Mexico. Ordained a priest in 1984, he worked in Mexico until 1998. From 1998 to 2004, he was working on the missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in 2005, went to Guatemala, where he was Superior of the Central American delegation.
Founded in 1867 by Saint Daniel Comboni (1831-1881), the Combonian Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (MCCI) are today 1,702 (18 Bishops, 1,252 priests, 266 brothers, and 173 students in their final stages of preparation) and are present in 182 dioceses in 42 nations of Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America. They work in a wide range of areas in the missions: first evangelization, city ghettos, formation of pastoral workers, promotion of indigenous and African Americans, vocations promotion, along with various mass media initiatives.
