Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI, on 19 April 2008, accepted the renunciation of the pastoral government of the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio (Sudan) presented by Bishop Joseph Abangite Gasi, in conformity with the Code of Canon Law, canon 401 § 1. The Holy Father has appointed Fr. Edward Hiiboro Kussala, professor of moral theology at St. Paul's Seminary in Khartoum (Sudan) as Bishop of Tombura-Yambio.
The bishop-elect was born March 23, 1964 in Source Yubu, in the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio. From 1974-1979, he attended primary school in Source Yubu. He continued studies at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary in Rimenze (1980-1982) and passed to secondary school at St. Mary’s Senior Seminary, in Wau (1983-1985). He entered St. Paul’s National Seminary, attending the “orientation course” in 1986, and Philosophy courses in Juba (1987-1989), later earning a Diploma. From 1990-1993, he earned a B.A. in Theology. He was ordained a priest on May 20, 1994 in Khartoum, for the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio. Since then, he has ministered as follows: 1994-2001: parish vicar for the parish of Sts. Peter and Paul and Recotr of the Minor Seminary for the Diocese of Tombura-Yambio in the Central African Republic, in the Sudanese Refugees Camp of Mboki; Bursar and head of pastoral care for the diocesan personnel in the Sudanese refugee camps of the Central African Republic and Director of the secondary school for refugees of Mboki; 2002-2005: completed studies for a degree in Moral Theology at the Alfonsiana Academy (Rome); 2003-2005: studies for a M.A. in International Law at the Lateran University, and later studies in Administration and Personnel Management (at the same University), graduating in 2004. He also attended “Spirituality for educators” courses and bioethics classes at the Angelicum (Rome). Since 2005, has been professor of moral theology at St. Paul’s National Seminary, in Khartoum.
