AFRICA/KENYA - Unrest in Kenya seriously affects activity of Italian Amici di Raul Follereau Association partners

Wednesday, 23 January 2008

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - Disorder in Kenya following political elections last December, has had serious effects in areas where partners of the Italian Association Amici di Raul Follereau operate programmes of social and health care and community development. ‘IDEA Kenya’, which works to promote respect for the rights of people with leprosy in Nairobi, and ‘Koscobar-K’, involved in activities of healthcare, education and community development in Korogocho, report that many members of their groups had their homes sacked and some close relations injured. The programme activities were seriously affected by the violence which has not stopped.
‘Koscobar-K’ works with basic groups and has a coordination office in Ngomongo district where the people are mainly Luo. The activity of the office is conditioned by fear of attacks by members of other tribes.
Many of the persons who benefit from Koscobar-K activity were physically and mentally affected by the violence which started on 29 December. About 18% of the group members had to leave their homes to seek safety elsewhere. This meant they lost their property. Adults and children suffer from trauma. Families with husband and wife of different ethnic origin have also been affected and many have separated. (AIFO/AP) (23/1/2008 Agenzia Fides; righe 20, parole 258)
