Lima (Agenzia Fides) - Sunday 8 July Peru celebrates National Day of Missionary Sick People 2007 with the theme Through the Cross to the Light organised by the Pontifical Mission Societies Peru with the Union of Sick and Elderly Missionaries. The purpose is to spread awareness that even sick people can and do bear witness to Jesus Christ despite of their condition. The Day will be hosted by La Salle Schools with the participation of elderly and sick people, priests, health pastoral workers, doctors and volunteer helpers from various hospitals and care centres. The participants will focus on the Cross as a symbol of total Love, a source of comfort and consolation for every form of suffering and frailty. In Arequipa, on the occasion of the Day the diocesan Pontifical Mission Societies office has organised special Masses at different times of the day in homes for the elderly, hospitals, nursing homes and at the parish of St John of God/ The Union of Sick and Elderly Missionaries helps sick or elderly people realise that united with the sufferings of Christ and offered to God, they become active members of the Church's mission to evangelise and their pain and suffering serves for the redemption of the world.
