ASIA/INDIA - “Catholic schools follow the four cardinal virtues Prudence, Justice, Temperance, Fortitude”, says Archbishop of Bangalore and ceremony for 125th anniversary of St Joseph’s College

Bangalore (Fides Service) - “Youth today faces difficult challenges. Catholic schools and colleges must cultivate the four cardinal virtues: Prudence, enables us to understand what is right; Justice enables us to recognise our duties; Temperance enables us to control desires; Fortitude gives us the courage to fight for our rights and not to desist”. This was said by Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore during a ceremony for the 125th anniversary of St Joseph’s Catholic College in Bangalore.
“The College has worked hard all these years to help students develop into enthusiastic and responsible citizens. It has educated many and has served the good of Indian society”, he added. Lauding the teaching staff and the curriculum studiorum, Archbishop Moras said the institute, run by the Jesuit Fathers, was a place “prepares young people to act for social change”, especially those who belong to less fortunate classes or who suffer discrimination. “Education in India - he explained - in economic, social and political life is at the cross roads with forces which intend to dictate their own values. We must be ready to promote universal values. In this situation St Joseph’s College deserves a front place”.
Among the many former pupils attending the ceremony there were prominent members of the economic and business world, human rights activists. The school programme includes the study of philosophy, history and various sciences. The present rector Fr. Ambrose Pinto, traced the history of the college. Other interventions highlighted its important service of educating young people, Catholics and non Catholics to the values of democracy, pluralism, respect for every human person and social harmony.
