Nairobi (Agenzia Fides)- “This is a great honour for us and a positive recognition of our station’s commitment to break the silence on HIV/AIDS,” Radio Waumini director Fr Martin Wanyoike told CISA Catholic Information Service Africa. Two journalists working for Kenya’s only Catholic radio station have won international awards recognizing their work in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Esther Kabugi and Anthony Wafula of Waumini FM won the UNESCO Red Ribbon Award for Radio Excellence during celebrations to mark World Aids Day on Dec.1. The two presenters took the first and second prizes respectively, beating other contestants from Eastern and Southern Africa. The top prize is 1500 USD, plus a certificate of achievement. The second and third places receive 750 USD and 500 USD respectively and a certificate. Ms Kabugi’s winning entry highlighted the plight of AIDS orphans and children made vulnerable by HIV, while Mr Wafula’s examined HIV/Aids at the workplace.
The activity of the two journalists is part of a two-year campaign on HIV/AIDS, which Radio Waumini has been running partly funded by the Catholic charity, CAFOD. (Caritas England and Wales)
