Rome (Fides News Agency) – “We live in a time of separation between faith and science. It is a time of rift between faith and reason, between faith and culture,” said canon lawyer and Scalabrinian Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, who died in 2017.
“This separation in the area of law,” De Paolis explained, “is evident above all in the prevailing positivist view of law, in the conception of law as purely formal law without an ethical foundation.” While the Church “is far from positivist tendencies” and “embeds its law in a broad vision of its order or discipline, which neither begins nor ends with law.”

Nine years after his death, the Pontifical Urbaniana University will host the fifth study day of the "Velasio De Paolis Chair" on Tuesday, April 28. This study day is dedicated to the examination and discussion of crucial questions concerning law in the life of the Church.
"Faith in Law: Philosophical and Juridical Perspectives" is the theme of the study day, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Aula Magna Benedetto XVI.

After the greetings from Professor Vincenzo Buonomo, Rector of the Pontifical Urbaniana University, and Professor Andrea D'Auria, Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law, the morning session, moderated by Professor Maurizio Martinelli, will begin with a lecture by Professor Luca Tuninetti, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Pontifical University, on the topic of "Person, Ecclesial Community, and Law." This will be followed by a presentation by Professor Sandra Mazzolini of the Faculty of Missiology on "Church, Faith, and Law from the Perspective of the Evangelizing Mission."

The study day concludes with a lecture by Professor Antoine M. Ndiaye on the topic "What is the relationship between faith and law?" and closing remarks. (EG) (Fides News Agency, 27/4/2026)
