Brasília (Agenzia Fides) – A severe weather front has unleashed the strongest tornado in 40 years, causing widespread destruction and leaving many dead and injured in southern Brazil. The town of Rio Bonito do Iguaçu was particularly hard hit.

According to local authorities, the storm, with wind speeds exceeding 250 km/h (155 mph), leveled houses and left people missing, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency. Rescue teams continue to search through the rubble, while hospitals treat dozens of seriously injured residents. This is one of the worst weather-related disasters in the region in recent years.

"We unite in prayer for the lives lost and for the countless families whose homes have been destroyed," said the Presidency of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB) in a statement expressing "solidarity with the Diocese of Guarapuava in Paraná and the other states affected by the heavy rainfall."

Houses with completely torn-off roofs, uprooted trees, fallen power lines, and collapsed concrete pillars characterize the scene. In some areas, it is estimated that up to 90% of buildings have been partially or completely destroyed.

In addition to asking for prayers and support, the country's bishops have requested the broadest possible cooperation in humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts in the devastated areas. The CNBB has also expressed its “pastoral closeness and support for the communities and parishes that are undertaking concrete acts of charity and solidarity with those affected.”

In light of the emergency, Caritas Guarapuava, in collaboration with the South 2 Region of the CNBB, has launched a solidarity campaign to raise funds for the affected families. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 11/11/2025)
