Beijing (Agenzia Fides) - More than 120 dead, almost 200 injured, 50 thousand displaced, tens of thousands of homes destroyed or damaged. This is the preliminary toll of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri county and the urban area of Shigatse, in the Chinese autonomous province of Tibet, on Tuesday 7 January at 9:05 a.m.
In the face of the natural disaster, which Pope Francis also mentioned in his address today to the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See, the Chinese Catholic communities are also actively participating in the solidarity initiatives launched to support the affected population.
“During the Christmas season and on the occasion of the Holy Year that has just begun, we can take the opportunity to remember the Lord’s teaching: ‘Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me’ (Matthew 25:40),” reads the appeal from the Diocese of Beijing, which calls on everyone to “do the good works of the Jubilee Year and give generously so that people in the earthquake-affected areas can also experience the joy of the Christmas season and the warmth and strength of Christian hope in the Jubilee Year.”
All parishes in the Diocese of Beijing are invited to ask for donations for the earthquake victims and to send the funds to the diocesan collection point by January 15. The diocesan charity named after the Divine Mercy will manage the sending and distribution of the donations.
The diocese of Shanthou has also made an appeal to all Catholic communities to collect donations for the earthquake victims in Tibet, pointing to the Holy Year of Hope as a favorable opportunity to put into practice the material and spiritual works of mercy.
The information released by the local authorities coordinating the mobilization of aid by the city of Shanghai states that among the first donations received was a sum of 500,000 yuan, made available by the diocese of Shanghai to support relief efforts for those affected by the disaster.
