Apostolic Vicariate of Caroni: “An exciting mission”

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - For the first time, the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) of Venezuela organized Missionary Week, a series of initiatives dedicated to missionary animation and formation that the PMS are carrying out in the local Churches. The Apostolic Vicariate of Caronì, in the south of the country, which recently celebrated 102 years of its canonical foundation hosted this new initiative, which took place from 22 to 25 February.
Gonzalo Ontiveros, Apostolic Vicar of Caroní, expressed his desire to offer missionary formation to those who work in this area. “A coordinated and interesting work was developed, it was an absolutely precious experience for the animators and something historic for our Vicariate", said Monsignor Ontiveros, explaining: "I emohasized how necessary it is to give continuity to these experiences and to the consolidation of the PMS in our Vicariate".
During Missionary Week, the School of Missionary Animators took place with the participation of more than 40 young people and adults from different indigenous communities of the Vicariate, such as San Rafael de Kamoirsen, Kavanayén, Wonken, Manakrü, Mapaurí, San Ignacio and Yuruani. This formative experience also launched the activity of the Pontifical Society for Missionary Childhood and Adolescence (IAM) in the Vicariate of Caroní. At the same time, a day of missionary animation was organized for the young people of the Vicariate, during which they reflected on the life of missionary discipleship and the role of young people, as well as a presentation meeting with pastoral health workers of the Missionary Group of the Sick and the Elderly.
Ider Flores, seminarian and media manager of the Vicariate, commented: "We saw the joy, enthusiasm and dedication of the young people, despite the fact that it was a completely new experience, they welcomed it with an open heart and they had many formative opportunities".
Among the experiences offered during Missionary Week was the visit to several indigenous communities where there are canteens for children, supported by the material missionary cooperation that the Church offers through the PMS.
Blanca Ramírez, director of the local school, said that the project of the missionary canteen named after Blessed Pauline Jaricot, foundress of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, which is in its second year, contributed very significantly to supplementing children's nutrition and thus enabling them to access education. Among the places visited, the community of San José de Wuará where the national secretaries Yesenia Quintero, Luis Mindiola and Sr. Luisa Caguana, SJBP, had the opportunity to meet the children who benefited from the canteen and school reinforcement activities.
