AMERICA/HAITI - Kidnapped religious women released

Port-au-Prince (Agenzia Fides) - The six sisters of the Congregation of Saint Anne who were kidnapped on January 19 are free (see Fides 22/1/2024). Together with them, the other two captives, the driver of the minibus in which the nuns were traveling at the time of the abduction and the niece of one of the sisters, were released. "The Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince thanks the Lord for the release of the six nuns and others who were kidnapped with them on January 19," the archdiocese said in a statement. The circumstances of the release are unknown. The security situation in the Caribbean country worries the United Nations, which in a report presented by Secretary General Antonio Guterres denounced the escalation of gang violence in Haiti (see Fides 24/1/2024). However, the UN's proposal to send a Kenyan-led security mission on the basis of a Security Council resolution adopted in October has suffered a major blow with the Nairobi Supreme Court ruling declaring the deployment of Kenyan police in Haiti unconstitutional . The ruling issued today, January 26, states that Kenya's National Security Council, unlike the army, does not have the authority to deploy police officers outside the country's borders. However, the UN has asked for policemen, deemed more suitable, to deal with the approximately 300 criminal gangs fighting for control of the country. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 26/1/2024)
