ASIA/THAILAND - Resignation and appointment of th Bishop of Ubon Ratchathani

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On Saturday, December 2, the Holy Father Francis accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, presented by Bishop Philip Banchong Chaiyara.
The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Stephen Boonlert Phromsena, of the clergy of the diocese of Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, until now parish priest of the Archangel Raphael parish, director of the Thepphithak Phithaya School and the Holy Infant Jesus Ubon School, as bishop of the same diocese.
Msgr. Stephen Boonlert Phromsena was born on 24 February 1960 in Ban Sithan, in the diocese of Ubon Ratchathani. After attending the minor seminary, he studied philosophy and theology at the Lux Mundi National Major Seminary in Sampran. He was also awarded master’s degrees in history of Thailand from Mahasarakham University and in education from Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok.
He was ordained a priest on 8 May 1987 for the clergy of Ubon Ratchathani.
He has held the following offices: deputy parish priest of Saint Michael in Ban Songyae (1987-1989); parish priest of Saint Joseph in Bang Sesong (1989-1992; 2004-2013); Conversion of Saint Paul in Ban Nadun (1989-1992), Saint Michael in Ban Songyae and Saint Anthony in Ban Nongkae (1992-1995); director of the Infant Jesus School in Roi-et with the responsibility for the care of the faithful in the area (1995-2004); director of the Sonyae Thippaya School (2004-2013); parish priest of Our Lady Mother of Christian Helper and Our Lady of Lourdes in Surin and director of the Infant Jesus School in Payakpaphumisai (2013-2018); parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral; director of the Presbyteral Council and member of the Commission for Economic Affairs (2018-2022); since 2018, director of the Theppithak Phithaya School and the Holy Infant Jesus Ubon School and consultor of the diocese; and since 2023, parish priest of Archangel Raphael.
