Terego (Fides News Agency) - "We are in the district of Terego, in northern Uganda, and it is a day of great celebration. The people are celebrating their independence from British colonialism that took place 62 years ago." Recounting the details of this joyous day and the on-going celebrations is Sister Laura Gemignani, a Combonian missionary, contacted by Fides Agency. "Amid singing and dancing, women cooking, boys selling sugar cane, there are so many young people from all schools who have walked hours to reach the new district of Terego, on the outskirts of Arua. It seems that on this day all problems disappear at least for a while."
"I have found Uganda to be one of the most joyful and festive countries," the missionary continues, "any occasion for celebration is good. Today everyone is waiting for the arrival of a government representative to celebrate the Independence gained on October 9, 1962. This is a young country and the government is working hard on education and bringing schools to even the most remote villages."
Sister Laura concludes by saying that the party was also attended by women from the Daniele Comboni Training Center, with whom the Comboni missionaries are running a sewing course and other small initiatives. "Tomorrow we will be in Arua, about 20 Combonians and Combonians, sisters and lay people, to celebrate the Dies Natalis anniversary and the 20th anniversary of the canonization of our Founder Daniele Comboni."
On Oct. 9, 1962, Britain granted independence to the African nation. The following year Uganda became a republic in which Lango leader of the Uganda People's Congress, Milton Obote, was appointed prime minister and kabaka Mutesa II president.
