Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - We entrust the survivors, rescuers and volunteers working in earthquake-stricken Morocco "to the special protection of the Virgin Mary, to her maternal intercession", said Archbishop Peter Soon-Taick Chung of Seoul in a message, after the devastating earthquake in Morocco on September 8th. The entire Catholic community in Seoul will "do its best to help the Moroccan people." More than 2,900 people died and 2,500 were injured in the worst earthquake in 120 years. "I express my condolences to those affected by the powerful earthquake "I express my deep sadness and condolences to those who have lost their homes and families and I hope for a speedy recovery of the injured," said the Archbishop, who assured the prayers and concrete solidarity of the entire Korean Church. In the message addressed to the Archdiocese of Rabat (Morocco), the Archbishop expresses the desire to contribute materially and spiritually to alleviating suffering through humanitarian aid. In order to meet the needs of the local population, aid organizations based in Seoul such as "Babo nanum" and the "One Body One Spirit" movement have already started sending emergency aid to Morocco through the Caritas Internationalis network. Meanwhile, thanks to the support of the Caritas Internationalis network, Caritas Morocco has started providing generators, clothing, first aid kits, food, medicine and tents to the affected people in and around the city of Amzmiz. The government in Seoul has also announced that it will send $2 million worth of humanitarian aid to Morocco, which will arrive on site thanks to diplomatic agreements with the Moroccan government, which has also been offered an emergency response team made up of medical personnel and specialized rescue workers to send. In this regard, the Korean government emphasized that it intends to "work closely with the Moroccan government and the international community to provide the necessary support." The solidarity of Asian countries with the Moroccan population takes place mainly through partnerships between humanitarian organizations: for example, the Chinese Red Cross has provided the Moroccan Red Crescent with USD 200,000 for humanitarian aid. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched an urgent appeal for donations of 100 million Swiss francs to support the relief efforts of the Moroccan Red Crescent Movement. Numerous aid or charitable organizations in Asian countries are joining the call and contributing to this fund. (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 14/9/2023)
