AFRICA/NIGER - Coup: Situation in Niamey still uncertain

Niamey (Fides News Agency) - The situation is still uncertain in Niamey, Niger's capital city, where a military coup is taking place (see Fides 27/7/2023). President Mohamed Bazoum is still being held in his residence, surrounded by the Presidential Guard. The coup was launched by said military corps, which was then joined by other units of the defense and security forces. A military government has been established under the name Conseil National de la Sauvegarde de la Patrie (CNSP), claiming to have seized power "to put an end to bad socioeconomic governance and to the country's security situation".
Disorders were reported in some areas of the capital, particularly around the headquarters of President Bazoum's party, PNDS (Parti Nigérien pour la Démocratie et le Socialisme) –Tarraya, attacked by some of the protesters.
There were scenes of exultation in support of the soldiers in several regions of the country, while those in favor of democratic institutions were broken up by the troops.
For its part France, which has 1,500 troops in the country, has declared it does not yet consider the coup attempt "definitive", suggesting a possible political solution. (L.M.) (Fides News Agency 28/7/2023)
