Khartoum (Agenzia Fides) - Fighting in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, resumed immediately after the end of the 24-hour ceasefire at 6 am on Sunday morning, June 11th.
Clashes between Sudanese Army soldiers (SAF) and the militiamen of the Rapid Support Force (RSF) are concentrated in the south and center of Khartoum, and in Shambat along the Nile, Haj Youssef in Bahri up to the strategic Halfiya bridge, which crosses Omdurman.
The densely populated neighborhood of Haj Youssef in Bahri, one of three adjacent cities that together with Khartoum and Omdurman form the capital at the confluence of the Nile.
On Friday, June 9, on the eve of the 24-hour ceasefire, the two factions clashed in northwest Omdurman.
According to local sources, Sudanese forces advanced on multiple axes into Khartoum on Sunday, June 11, after the end of the 24-hour ceasefire. Reinforcements had previously arrived from other parts of the country. According to reports, "it was the fiercest fighting since the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the Yarmuk munitions complex on 6 and 7 June". The factory is part of the Sudanese Army's military-industrial complex, which uses it to supply its troops, but also to procure foreign currency from abroad. A part of the Sudanese military production is in fact exported. In an attempt to seize the Yarmuk ammunition factory, the RSF wanted to achieve three goals: to prevent the army from rearming itself, to obtain ammunition for its own forces and finally to develop a source of income.
Both sides engaged in a firefight using mortars and artillery, including firing rockets from field rocket launchers, causing heavy damage to civilian buildings.
The 24-hour ceasefire, which began Saturday morning, was negotiated during talks led by Saudi Arabia and the United States in Jeddah. A previous 12-day ceasefire agreed by both sides in Jeddah had been broken repeatedly. The fact that the ceasefire was respected by both sides this time is a sign that the two adversaries have demonstrated effective control over their armed forces, with the result that the fighting has subsided across Sudan and has enabled the delivery of vital humanitarian aid.
