ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Our Lady of Consolation on pilgrimage in the country: deep Marian devotion

Thursday, 11 May 2023 marian devotion   prayer

Manila (Agenzia Fides) - Our Lady of Consolation visits neighborhoods and buildings in the city of Manila, as well as throughout the country, to bring a message of hope, peace, support and comfort to the poor and oppressed, to the suffering, to the desperate and to all those who rely on her intercession.
During the month of May, the traditional "Marian month", in which the devotion of the Filipino faithful to the Virgin Mary is strongly manifested, the Shrine of St. Augustine, located in the historic district of "Intramuros" in Manila - the oldest area, where there are buildings, works and remains of Spanish colonization - organized a special pilgrimage of Our Lady of Consolation in the diocese and throughout the nation.
The image of the Virgin was presented and blessed during the first congress of shrines of the Archdiocese of Manila, which was held on May 1. Father Edwin Hari, an Augustinian priest and rector of the shrine, said the "peregrinatio Mariae" initiative aimed to further promote devotion to Our Lady: "The Virgin of Consolation will visit local communities, not only in the Archdiocese from Manila, but also in different places in the country. We want pilgrims to become more and more familiar with the historical devotion to Our Lady of Consolation, which has sustained the life of faith of devotees here in Intramuros for centuries. We wish to extend the practice of the "coronilla" prayer, a crown of invocations to the Mother of Consolation, in which the Virgin is invoked in a special way as comforter of the afflicted", he explained.
The image will be welcomed first of all in the parishes of the country where the Augustinian fathers are present and where there is the "Confraternity of Our Lady of Consolation and of the Girdle", a lay association directed by the Augustinian friars, then it will visit all places and churches that have requested it, in various dioceses of the nation, throughout the month of May.
Designated as an archdiocesan
shrine in 2000, St. Augustine's Church is a place of pilgrimage and, during the Jubilee, Our Lady of Consolation received the papal coronation here. According to the Association of Catholic Shrines and Pilgrimages of the Philippines (ACSP), St. Augustine's Church is one of the most popular churches in the country, welcoming thousands of worshipers and devotees every year.
Marian devotion is widespread in the Philippines, a predominantly Catholic country. Among the most venerated figures of the Virgin are the Virgin of Antipolo (in the province of Rizal), the Virgin of Peñafrancia (in the region of Bicol), Our Lady of the Visitation (in the province of Cagayan) and the Virgin of the Rule in the Visayas Islands.
