Bangui (Agenzia Fides) - "Unfortunately, the doctors have decided to amputate Father Norberto's foot", says to Fides Father Aurelio Gazzera, a confrere of Father Norberto Pozzi, the 71-year-old Carmelite missionary injured during the explosion of a land mine on the Bozoum-Bocaranga highway, in the north-west of the Central African Republic (see Fides, 13/2/2023).
After the initial treatment at the MINUSCA (UN Mission in the Central African Republic) hospital in Bangui, Father Norberto was transferred to Entebbe (Uganda), where doctors were forced to make the decision to amputate.
"During the operation, the doctors found that the foot bone was completely destroyed and the tissue in necrosis," explains Father Aurelio. "The decision, not an easy one, was made after consulting both Claudio, a doctor and father Norberto's brother, and Dr. Destro, from the Italian embassy in Kampala," continues the missionary, who managed to reach Father Norbert.
