AFRICA/NIGERIA - Appointment of the Rector of the Pope John Paul II Major Seminary in Awka

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On May 27, 2022, Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle appointed rev. Cyril Chukwudozie Udebunu, of the diocesan clergy of Onitsha as Rector of the Pope John Paul II Major Seminary in the diocese of Awka, Nigeria.
The new Rector was born on September 23, 1962 and was ordained a priest on July 13, 1991. He studied philosophy at St. Joseph's Seminary in Ikot Ekpene, and theology at Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu. He received his doctorate in philosophy from the Catholic University of Louvain (2000-2004). He carried out his pastoral service as assistant parish priest in various parishes. He was Vice Rector of All Hallow's Seminary in Onitsha (1994/1997), "Administrative Dean of Philosophy" (2012/2016) and Vice Rector (2016/2018) of Pope John Paul II Major Seminary in the diocese of Awka. Since February 2022 he has been Secretary General of the National Seminary Commission, and since 2019 "Acting Rector" of the Seminary of which he has been appointed Rector.
