Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - This year, the direction of the Pontifical Mission Societies of Australia (PMS), Catholic Mission, will focus its Missionary October commitment on the Church of Ethiopia and local communities. Catholic Mission supports a number of missionary development programs in Ethiopia that aim to combat malnutrition and encourage literacy for children and vocational training for women. In the rural region of Emdibir, where 70 percent of families have great difficulty finding food, a goat farm has been set up whose resources help fight against malnutrition, a phenomenon that causes infant death in 50 percent of the cases. This project is led by Father Habte, a priest committed to bringing the local community out of social hardship and poverty by creating employment, providing sustainable food resources and hope.
In the capital Addis Ababa, the main focus is on giving children access to education. Sister Carmen Sammut (SJA) launched a scholarship program to offer children from families in financial difficulties the opportunity to go to school and build a future for themselves. In Meki, Catholic Mission's relief efforts focus on women who need to learn skills and gain financial independence for their careers.
Every year in Australia, young people are made aware of the mission with the "Socktober Campaign", which is taking place again this year in Australian schools. As part of the football tournament, young people learn more about the importance of mission and the meaning of being missionaries. (EG) (Agenzia Fides, 1/9/2022)
