Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - The Dominican Episcopal Conference (CED) has announced the celebrations planned for the closing of the Altagracian Jubilee Year, convened on the occasion of the centenary of the canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Altagracia (see Fides, 18/7/2022), which will be held on Monday, August 15 at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, starting at eight in the morning. During a press conference held at the CED headquarters, Monsignor José Dolores Grullón Estrella, Bishop Emeritus of San Juan de la Maguana and President of the National Commission that organized the Centenary events, explained that the original image of the Virgin of Altagracia will be transferred from the Basilica of Higüey for a tour that will end at the Olympic Stadium. Several moments will be lived here, which will conclude with a solemn mass presided over by the special envoy of Pope Francis, Monsignor Edgar Peña Parra, Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretary of State, which will be concelebrated by the Dominican Bishops, international guests and priests from the country.
Before this meeting, a commemorative act will be held at the Puerta del Conde, with the participation of the government, legislative and municipal authorities, in the place where the coronation of the Virgin was held 100 years ago. The Rosary of the Dawn of this day will be recited in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Altagracia in the Colonial City, a temple built in 1922 to commemorate the coronation. On Sunday, August 14, the pilgrimage of the painting of the Virgen de la Altagracia to Santo Domingo will begin, more than 70 years after its last visit in 1944. The image will be received by the Archbishop of Santo Domingo, Monsignor Francisco Ozoria Acosta, and the auxiliary bishops, who will take it in procession to the Cathedral, where a vigil will be held until six in the morning. All events will be broadcast by a media network. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 27/7/2022)
