Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - With the motto "Your commitment shortens distances", Caritas Argentina has launched its traditional annual collection, which will take place on June 11 and 12 in parishes throughout the country. The contributions, which can now be made electronically, will serve to meet the urgent need of millions of Argentines in a situation of poverty and destitution in the face of the growing demand for assistance that the entity attends in its assistance centers deployed throughout the national territory. As reported in the note sent to Fides, thanks to the contribution of Argentine citizens, in 2021 Caritas Argentina was able to help almost 700,000 people with comprehensive human development and food assistance programs. "Poverty and homelessness have raged against our compatriots. The numbers of poverty speak for themselves and each number has a face, a story of suffering and despair that we have to reverse", said Monsignor Carlos Tissera, President of Caritas Argentina . Nicolás Meyer, Executive Director added: "We call on the political and business leadership to make urgent decisions to care for Argentine families experiencing a dramatic situation. The needs suffered by millions of Argentines require a significant coordination and logistical effort to bring material attention and spiritual containment to the most needy Argentines".
Last year, the total collection for the Annual Collection was $218,642,457. The figure represented a 73.3% increase compared to 2020. The money from the Collection is used to support immediate aid and comprehensive human development programs that Caritas develops throughout the year. In addition to basic needs, projects related to productive and self-consumption micro-enterprises, job training, educational inclusion, pastoral and community approach to addictions, early childhood care, citizenship training, comprehensive care community centers, kindergartens are promoted.
