Rome (Agenzia Fides) - The XIX General Chapter of the Comboni Missionaries, inspired by the biblical icon "I am the vine, you are the branches" (Jn 15.5), will take place from June 1 to 30, at the General House of the Institute in Rome.
The capitular participants are sixty-nine, plus four observers. The first four days will be days of preparation.
With the solemn Eucharist on Pentecost Sunday, June 5, the Chapter will officially begin. The information disseminated by the Comboni Missionaries points out that in addition to the 5 members of the General Council (7% of the participants), the other members of the chapter come from English-speaking Africa plus Mozambique 21 (30% of the total), from America-Asia 18 (27%), from Europe 16 (23%), and from French-speaking Africa 9 (13%). In terms of nationalities, the Comboni Missionaries summoned to the Chapter are of 24 different nationalities: 30 Africans, 28 Europeans, 11 Americans. The countries of origin with the most chapter members are: Italy (13), Uganda (7), DR Congo (6), Mexico, Spain and Portugal, with 5 each. The 4 observers are the general secretaries of the Institute, that is to say the mission, training, the economy and the general secretary. The chapter actually started a long time ago, in fact it was supposed to take place in September 2021, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been postponed until now. Throughout this time, a synodal process of reflection has been engaged at the personal, community, circumscription and continental levels. The General Chapter will consist of three fundamental phases. The first is the preparatory phase, which includes getting to know each other, the election of the various service leaders who will help with the work, a prayerful retreat and a brief formation on the missionary, synodal and fraternal Church, in the line with the Pope Francis' magisterium.
A phase of listening to the various reports of the various areas will follow. The last phase will be that of discernment on the fundamental elements on which to work, with the choice of priorities and paths to be followed the years to come. Finally, there will be the election of the next Superior General and his Council. The closing declaration of the Chapter is scheduled for June 29, and the closing Eucharist the following day, June 30. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 31/5/2022)
