Lomè (Agenzia Fides) - "Our students are on vacation, with their families and in their parishes. After Easter we will welcome five interns from Benin, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Tanzania who will work in different parishes in the country. They want to review their journey together and share a moment of prayer", said Father Silvano Galli, of the Society for African Missions (SMA) in a report on the Easter holidays and recent developments in Lomé, with particular attention to the most vulnerable outskirts of the big city and beyond the work of the Province of Togo in general.
"All over Lomé there are big signs: 'Your' new bank is open, 'Your' petrol station is open', and beyond, on the new road under construction: we are working for 'you'. And again a huge billboard with a man with a big and winking smile: Come to us, 'your' new bank is open, not to mention the various malls, beauty centers and shops of all kinds. The highlight of the message is always: 'for you, for you, we are waiting for you, do not miss this unique opportunity'. You feel challenged, called, involved, and not just invited", the missionary strongly emphasizes.
"It gives an emotional boost: they are all there for you and fully available to put the world in your hands." “Perhaps we should send the same message from the Africa Missions Society: We work for you! Only this message is true," emphasizes Father Galli.
"I saw the work being done on the new dispensary in Tovè (see Fides, 26/3/2022)", continues Father Galli. "I was there on March 21st. The place belongs to the urban area of Lomé, but it is in the middle in the country, in the middle of the big suburbs of the city. Huge amounts of sand, gravel and earth are being heaped up everywhere, and new buildings are springing up everywhere. Today the work is well advanced. The public health structures are not working or are working poorly, and so many private clinics are shutting down because they are very expensive, which most people cannot use. They prefer religious structures where the patient is welcomed with empathy, the work is well done and the prices are low. This is the job of our dispensary and its function: we provide appropriate health services for all, wherever people live". (SG/AP) (Agenzia Fides, 22/4/2022)
