ASIA/JAPAN - Appointment of the Bishop of Oita, His Exc. Sulpizio Shinzo Moriyama

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father Francis has appointed the rev. Sulpizio Shinzo Moriyama, of the clergy of Fukuoka, currently Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Japan, as Bishop of the Diocese of Oita (Japan). His Exc. Msgr. Sulpizio Shinzo Moriyama was born on January 17, 1959 in Fukuoka. He received his Baccalaureate in Philosophy at the Keio University of Tokyo in 1984 and in Theology at the St. Sulpizio Seminary in Fukuoka in 1988.
He was ordained a priest on March 21, 1988, incardinated in the Diocese of Fukuoka, where he held the following positions: Parish Vicar of Daimyo Cho (1988-1991) and of Kokura (1991-1993); Director of the Fukuoka Minor Seminary (1993-1995); Parish priest of Oomuta (1995-2001); Parish priest of Tobata (2001-2007); Parish priest of Nishijin (2007-2013); Parish priest of Kurume (2014-2017); President of the Diocesan Committee for Evangelization (2015-2017); Responsible for the formation of candidates in the Interdiocesan Seminary (2017-2020). Since 2020 he has been Undersecretary of the Episcopal Conference of Japan and Secretary General. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 5/4/2022)
