EUROPE/ITALY - Scalabrinian Year, the Vicar General: "Accompanying the migrant multiplies the missionary announcement"

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - "To re-propose the figure of Mgr. Scalabrini in his relevance and in his holiness: make him known, talk about him, tell about his passion for migrants so that others feel the same passion and intervene, at all levels, in the Church and in society. Ask for his intercession for the mission that the Church has entrusted to our Institutes, for the growth in the faith of those with whom we share the Word, for the promotion of the reception of those who are far from their land and family. Following this spirit, in order to make his testimony as missionary Bishop shine more prominently, we have decided to hold a special Scalabrinian Year which started on Sunday, November 7, 2021 and will end on November 9, 2022".
This was reported to Agenzia Fides by Father Gianni Borin, Vicar General of the Scalabrinian Missionaries, recalling that 2022 coincides with the 25th anniversary of the beatification of Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, which took place on November 9, 1997.
"There are three main elements that will accompany us during all celebrations. First of all – Fr. Gianni points out - we want to thank God for the gift of the Scalabrinian charism in the Church, remembering the history of these years of life of our missionary Family".
For the Vicar it is also important to verify their response to the gift received: "The Scalabrinian charism - he underlines - is clear and precise: missio ad migrantes lived in religious consecration, inserted in the more global context of the one mission of the Church".
In order to implement, then, an "adequate missionary presence", according to the Vicar General, it is necessary "to commit oneself promptly and with determination to respond in a manner corresponding to the gift received and to be so significant in our specificity in the mission of the Church today". This provides for a presence of witness and proclamation of the Gospel in the various continents: "The new face of the Scalabrinian mission - continues Father Borin - is emerging above all from Asia, the Americas and Africa, where our presence has been consolidated for many years, and where the current challenge is represented by interculturality. If the reasons for the new evangelization - he continues - vary according to the regions of the world and the type of relationship between faith and reason, the relationship between the cultures of the different regions involved is in turn capable of diversifying it. For this reason - he observes - in such different contexts, it is very important to witness God's love together as brothers".
Making the world homeland of man" is the theme of the Scalabrinian Year: "In such an important circumstance - Father Gianni points out - we feel in communion with the whole Scalabrinian Family: the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles, the Scalabrinan Secular Missionaries and all our family, friends, and benefactors who accompany us in this beautiful and extraordinary mission that the Lord has entrusted to us". "From now on - he concludes - we mutually urge each other to make this event, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, for our personal life, community, putting our personal responsibility first".
