AFRICA/ANGOLA - Appointment of auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Luanda

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father has appointed auxiliary bishops of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Luanda, Angola: the Reverend Msgr. António Lungieki Pedro Bengui, of the clergy of Luanda, until now Vicar General of the same Archdiocese, assigning him the titular see of Elephantaria in Proconsulari; the Reverend Msgr. Fernando Francisco, of the clergy of Sumbe, until now vicar general and parish priest of Sumbe Cathedral, assigning him the titular see of Medianas Zabuniorum.
Msgr. António Lungieki Pedro Bengui was born on 12 December 1973 in Damba, Uíje Province. He received his propaedeutic, philosophical and theological formation at the archdiocesan seminary Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Luanda, from 1990 to 2000.
He was ordained a priest on 28 October 2001 and incardinated in the metropolitan archdiocese of Luanda.
After priestly ordination, he first served as parish priest of Luanda Cathedral (2002-2004). He was awarded a licentiate and doctorate in civil and canon law, at the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome (2004-2009); chancellor of the Curia (2009-2019), lecturer in canon law at the major seminary of Luanda and in philosophy of law and legal ethics at the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN); parish vicar of San Marco, Morro Bento (2010-2018); jurisconsult for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and for legal-social matters (since 2010); judicial vicar and moderator of the Curia of Luanda (since 2013); parish vicar of Santa Cruz na Madeira (2013-2017); representative of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé during the public sessions of the Angolan Parliament (since 2014); vicar general; member of the Faith and Culture Centre and the Ethics Committee of Research on Human Beings of UCAN; member of the Portuguese Association of Canon Lawyers (APC); and member of the Angolan Group of Canonists (from 2019 to date).
Msgr. Fernando Francisco was born on 10 May 1960 in Lengue do Galo, Kwanza-Sul Province. In 1980 he began his propaedeutic course, then went on to study philosophy at the local major seminary (1982-1984). From 1984 to 1988, he studied theology at the major seminary of Huambo. In 1990 he moved to the Seminário dos Olivais, in Lisbon, Portugal. At the end of 1990 he returned to Angola and was ordained a priest on 15 August 1992.
Since ordination, he has carried out the following tasks: lecturer in the Propedeutic Seminary, bursar of the diocese and chaplain of the Novitiate of the Sisters of Guadalupe in Sumbe (1992-1993); doctorate in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Urbanian University, Rome (1993-2002); prefect of studies and lecturer at the major seminary and at the Catholic University of Luanda (2002-2012); parish vicar (2012-2013) and from 2013 until the present, vicar general of the diocese, parish priest of the Cathedral of Sumbe and coordinator of the Commission of Evangelisation and Catechesis.
