Bagamoyo (Agenzia Fides) - The general chapter of the Spiritans, meeting in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, from October 3 to 24, elected for the first time an African brother as superior general of the congregation. Current assistant general, in Rome, Father Alain Mayama, member of the province of Congo Brazzaville, was elected on October 18. The 25th Superior since the foundation of the Congregation, will take up his post in November, as the statement from the Spiritans informs.
Fr. Alain Mayama was born in Congo Brazzaville in 1971. He made perpetual religious profession in 1999 and was ordained a priest the following year. His missionary life began in Cameroon as a formator. Sent to the United States to continue his studies, he was in charge of the chaplaincy at the Port-Huron hospital in Detroit from 2007 to 2008. He then continued his mission of formator in Libreville, Gabon, from 2008 to 2010. On that date, he returned to his native land as provincial superior. During the general chapter of 2012, he was elected assistant general, which led him to Rome.
Fr Alain Mayama is now called to guide and accompany the more than 2,600 Spiritan missionaries who work in 60 countries on the five continents, together with the thousands of lay people who share the spirituality and mission of the Spiritans. The Congregation of the Holy Spirit, whose members are known as Spiritan missionaries, was founded in 1703 by the French deacon Poullart des Places, who died at the age of 30, two years after his priestly ordination.
