AMERICA/DOMINICAN REP. - From the first baptisms in America to the missionary commitment of all baptized

Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - Within the framework of the missionary month of October, the Dominican diocese of La Vega celebrated Diocesan Mission Day 2021 from October 8 to 10, in Cotuí, with the theme “525th anniversary of the first baptisms in America”. The celebrations began with a previous training itinerary on baptismal and missionary commitment, addressed to about 2,000 missionaries, including members of parish councils and 25 apostolic movements. These missionaries then visited all the families for three days, passing house to house, to share their reflection on two themes: "With baptism we are all children of God" and "Baptism makes us active members of a community called Church".
Father Francisco Jiménez, Vicar of the pastoral care of the diocese, explained that the first visit was for orientation and in the second the families received holy water with the aim of renewing their baptism, to make all family members feel like children of God, loved by God, even if they do not attend church.
During Mission Day, in addition to the celebrations, various social assistance activities were developed, in coordination with the government bodies, including talks on the management of emotions after the Covid-19 pandemic, with the aim of making the idea that "we are united in love, doing good to others". Monsignor Héctor Rodríguez, bishop of La Vega, announced that the Missionary Day for next year 2022 will be held in the province of Hermanas Mirabal and will have a Marian connotation on the occasion of the Jubilee Year of Altagraciano, from August 15, 2021 to August 15, 2022, to celebrate the Centenary of the Canonical Coronation of Our Lady of Altagracia (see Fides, 11/10/2021).
